Sport Lisboa e Benfica v Sporting CP
December 5
th, 2025
Matchday 13
Estádio da Luz

The warm up

The old enemies meet once more for the second Dérbi de Lisboa of the campaign. At the time of writing ahead of the match to Estrela tomorrow night the lions are unbeaten in ten matches in all competitions, their last defat coming in the Champions League away to Napoli 2-1. The only game they’ve failed to score in this campaign was the 1-0 defeat in the seasons curtain opener in the Supertaça against the dirty pigeons.

Many readers I’m sure will be familiar with the name of Béla Guttmann the Benfica coach between the years of 1959 and 1962 and again between 1965 and 1966. It was under Guttmann with a team of star names that included the legendary Eusébio that the Eagles would win back-to-back European Cups in 1961 and 1962 beating Barcelona and then Real Madrid. It was after the second win that he reportedly approached his paymasters and asked for a raise in his salary which led us to what he is now best remembered for – the curse of Béla Guttmann. Having had his request turned down he decided to take his services elsewhere and allegedly as a parting shot across the bows declared “Not in a hundred years from now will Benfica ever be European champions again.” To this day the Lisboa city rivals have not won another European final. The win in the Youth competition does not count as far as I'm concerned. Nowadays of course they don’t even need the curse, they can manage perfectly on their own to be piss poor in Europe having only just secured their first points of the current Champions League campaign beating Ajax who remain on 0 points.

Fast forward nearly 60 years and the eagles are now coached by José Mourinho, the once poster boy for coaching excellence and self-titled Special One. Now fast approaching the age of 63 in January it appears he is employed more often than not in a role akin to an after-dinner speaker. In his last role as coach of the Turkish Süper Lig side Fenerbahçe he succeeded in taking a side that had collected 99 points and finished runners up to Galatasaray to a runners up spot with 84 points and destroyed any notion of the stylistic football the fans had enjoyed under former coach Ismail Kartal. He was relieved of his duties ironically after losing in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League to his new employers. Some things it appears you couldn’t actually make up. In Turkey he was used by the club as a mouthpiece to highlight the perceived injustices of the leagues refereeing to any side not named Galatasaray. I’m assuming he has been given a similar remit for the red and white side of Lisboa as he publicly bemoaned their being cheated out of another title after the 3-1 loss in the Taça de Portugal last season. Note this was a game he had no involvement in whatsoever so feel free to argue against my original point if you will.

Benfica for so many years let their players do the talking on the pitch and now all the noise comes from the boardroom as it does largely with FC Porto. The constant conspiracies, the narrative that Sporting aren’t playing by the rules, that the referees are in the pocket of the lions. You’d have found less propaganda in the pages of The Völkischer Beobachter which was the Nazi newspaper published in Germany from December 1920 to April 1945. Can’t think why that ceased publication so suddenly. For all that though, they remain Portugal’s largest and successful club even if their president looks like he spends his evening hitting on 19 year old blondes in the nightclubs of Lisboa and could have also had a spell in blue movies after his playing career ended. I wonder if André Villas-Boas still has a build-up of sand between his ears from his spell in the Dakar Rally way back in 2018. This isn’t an FC Porto blog so I will digress.

If the club’s management have a current record of behaving badly then it should come as no surprise to learn that the club’s fans have been behaving with all the class of a GK Barry Women’s League Cup Draw. Before last season’s game at the stadium of shite one or more individuals decided it was a great idea to spray red paint over Sporting’s lion statue amongst other petty instances of vandalism on club property. Let’s be honest once more societies problems coming down to behaviour of men because you don’t envisage any of the damage is being done by the female fans of their club. It’s pathetic but it’s not surprising to me. Benfica fans are like toddlers all too ready to throw a tantrum when not getting their own way and their sense of entitlement is legendary in the Portuguese game. By the way I am acutely aware of the behaviour of fans of our club so please don’t think I am trying to portray us as angels in any way shape of form. If you want evidence then please read the post after the Club Brugge game in the Champions League game last season when I went to town on them for throwing flares after the defeat.

This may come as a surprise to readers but I want them to do well in European Football because I’m a pragmatist and know that wins for them means points for the Portuguese co-efficient and without success for all Portuguese clubs, we all suffer in terms of Champions League places and clubs having to go through qualifying campaigns. If Sporting fail to qualify then we stop being in a position where we keep hold of our better players for longer and we fall back into the spiral of old letting talent leave on their terms rather than ours.

Benfica have a record 38 title wins, alongside Sporting and Porto they’re one of only three clubs never to have been relegated from the topflight of Portuguese football. That’s a rare occurrence amongst the elites of European football I hasten to add. In Serie A Internazionale are the only club to not have been relegated since their inception in 1909. In Spain there are the three clubs; Real Madrid, Barcelona and our future Champions League opponents Athletic Club. In Germany; Bayern, Bayer Leverkusen and VfL Wolfsburg. In Scotland there are two – Aberdeen and Celtic and in Holland, three; Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord. Arsenal, Liverpool, the Manchester’s of United and City, Chelsea, Spurs… have all spent time outside of the topflight. In fact no club has ever not been relegated at some point during their time in the English topflight.

Benfica haven’t won the title since the 2022/23 campaign. This is a club not used to coming top just as Sporting are the ying to their yang in that they’re not used to winning titles consistently. At no point have I written this season that I expect a threepeat.  However going into Round 12 six points off FC Porto and three behind the lions before they face Nacional away, it’s hard to make a case that they’ll make it win 39 at the end of this campaign.

According to sources online this fixture has now been played a staggering 325 times with 116 wins, 70 draws, and 139 losses. Look we know our place in the history of Portuguese football, it’s been in the shadow of the neighbours for the longest of times, so you’ll forgive us if we’ve appeared overly excited the past two seasons.

Going into this weekend their record read played 11, won 4, drawn 4 and lost 0, GF 23, GA 6. At the Stadium of Shite Played 6, won 3, drawn 3, GF 14, GA 5. Their 23 goals have seen 13 come from open play, 3 from set pieces and a staggering SEVEN penalties scored in 11 games. Dear reader, this is the team who all Portuguese referees have a vendetta against, a hidden agenda, please do not forget that important fact. I mean they didn’t have a single player sent off in the league last season, but still… Oh and yes for reference that is the most number of penalties awarded to any side in the division.

Top scorer in the league is the Greek Vangelis Pavlidis with 9, six from the penalty spot. Sudakov and Ivanovic (which sounds like a dodgy Eastern European law firm if ever there was one) have 3 apiece whilst another 8 players have a solitary goal each. Six clean sheets to date, they have the 3rd best rated attack in terms of goals per match scored at 2.1 and are matching their overall XG which stands at 22.6. On average, they’ve conceded just 0.5 goals per game and the XG for conceding stands at 8.8 against the actual number of 6.

This isn’t the first meeting of the two sides this season so for a breakdown of their summer business in the transfer window, please refer to the Supertaça post. Since that game they beat Nice in the Champions League qualifiers by an aggregate score of 4-0 and the aforementioned defeat of Fenerbahçe which finished 1-0 on aggregate and ensured their qualification for the Champions League proper. They subsequently lost 3-2 at home to Qarabag, 1-0 away to Chelsea, 3-0 away to Newcastle, 1-0 at home to Bayer Leverkusen before their first win away to Ajax 2-0 last Tuesday.

In the Taça de Portugal last season’s beaten finalists beat Chaves 2-0 away and Liga 3 Zone B side Atletico 2-0 away and will face Farense away from home in the next round. In the Taça da Liga they beat Tondela 3-0 at home and will face Braga at home in the next round.

Their league campaign got off to a winning start away to Estrela winning 1-0 through a Pavlidis penalty on the hour. The eagles missed one of their 2 big chances and despite the narrow scoreline finished with an XG of 2.41 to 1.41.

Matchday 2 saw the welcome of newly promoted Tondela where they won 3-0. They were guilty of Sporting levels of chances missed with 4 out of 6 going begging. Their 21 attempts to 9 bringing an XG of 2.96 to 0.47.

Matchday 3 and another newly promoted side to face off against. Amazing how kind the fixtures can be for a side competing in the Club World Cup during the summer don’t you think? Leading 2-0 at half time they actually saw a man sent off. Twas the miracle before Christmas – if you discount it being super early and still only August. Alverca pulled one back 6 minutes before time but couldn’t find a leveller and Benfica maintained their 100% start winning 2-1. Their lowest XG of the campaign of just 1.03 to 0.81 and they converted their only big chance of the game.

Matchday 4 saw them welcome Santa Clara who were reduced to ten men on minute 33 when Paulo Victor was shown a straight red. Despite the advantage in terms of numbers it took the home side nearly an hour to take the lead. An Otamendi slip which saw him doing a sterling impression of the WWE wrestlers Scottie-too-hottie’s worm finishing move, allowed Vinicius to run clear and score the equaliser one minute into additional time and steal a point for the islanders in a 1-1 draw. 1 of 2 big chances missed for the home side, Santa actually missed 2 of their 3 recording an XG of 1.02 to the eagles 1.62. This was the mister Bruno Lages final league game in charge and he would be dismissed after the midweek loss to Qarabag that followed this game.

M
atchday 5 and Benfica now coached by Mourinho headed away to AVS. You couldn’t have had an easier debut as coach lets be fair given they have still only recorded 3 points as of November 29th after 12 games played. Still it took Benfica until the second minute of additional time in the first half to take the lead. Two second half goals added for a 3-0 win. Two of their five big chances missed, the XG 2.40 to 0.88 was only their 3rd highest despite being against by far the worst side in the division.

Matchday 6 and more disappointment at home as they could only manage a 1-1 draw at home to struggling Rio Ave. They must have thought they had secured all three points when Sudakov found the net 5 minutes from time only to see Luiz equalise on the stroke of 90 minutes. Rio Ave recorded four attempts all game, didn’t create a single big chance over the 90 and the XG was 2.57 to 0.16. Benfica missing 3 of their 3 big chances. The new manager bounce didn’t last long there then.

Matchday 7 they welcomed Gil Vicente who took the lead after just 10 minutes with an Esteves goal as they continued their fine start to the campaign. However 2 goals from Pavlidis in the space of 8 minutes in the first half turned the game on its head. Gil had a goal ruled out early in the second half and finished the game with 10 men although not until deep into additional time at the end of the game. Benfica created and scored their sole 1 big chance which would have been from the penalty spot. Gil missed both their big chances. If you take into account the XG on the penalty scored was 0.79 you can guess how great the quality of their remaining 9 attempts were with the XG finishing 1.27 to 1.26. The visitors really unfortunate not to leave with something from the game.

Matchday 8 was the snoozefest away to FC Porto in the Clássico. 0-0 for Mourinho against his old side and his side would muster a grand total of 4 attempts over the 90. 0 big chances created, an XG of 0.12 to Porto’s 0.68. There’s 90 minutes of peoples lives they’ll never get back again.

Matchday 9 at home to Arouca and they figured out what the thing with the net at the back was for as they metered out their biggest win for the campaign in all competitions with a 5-0 win. Pavlidis with a hat-trick, Arouca didn’t fashion a single big chance, recorded 5 shots, as Benfica finished missed just 1 of their 5 big chances with the XG 3.84 to 0.44.

Matchday 10 away to Vitória SC brought a third clean sheet in a row and another three points as they won 3-0. The home side reduced to ten men on 55 minutes when Fabio Blanco received his marching orders 2 minutes after Araujo had broke the deadlock. 24 attempts in total for the visitors, guilty of missing 4 of 6 big chances and finishing with an XG of 2.13 to 0.43.

Finally matchday 11 at home to everyone’s favourite Portuguese orphanage Casa Pia AC. Benfica would throw away a 2-0 lead first through a highly amusing Araujo own goal and then Nhaga equalised on the stroke of 90 to claim a huge point for them. Benfica scored with 2 of their 3 big chances, Casa Pia with the opposite converting just 1 of their 3. The XG 2.22 to 1.21.

Benfica face Nacional at 1800 hours on Saturday November 29th.

Sunday update:

Sporting B

Sporting B v Farense

November 30th, 2025

Alcochete

Starting XI

Callai, Blopa, Romulo, D Moreira, Dias, Cardoso, Lucas, Justo, Gonçalves, Mendonca and Nel.

Substitutes Used

Oliveira, J. Silva, G. Silva, Couto and Besugo

Last season Farense were taking on Sporting's first team in the top flight whereas the B side lest us forget we're playing their trade in Liga 3. Plenty of experience for the visitors with a back three aged 30, 31 and 39 years of age respectively. Their three youngest starters 20 and two 22 year olds compared to a Sporting side once more packed full of teenage talent.

Cardoso got the lions off to the perfect start as he swept home low into the bottom right hand corner from 15 yards to make it 1-0 with just 17 minutes played. They thought they'd double their lead on 32 minutes only to see the goal ruled out. Two minutes into additional time a moment of magic as Nel calmly chipped Araujo in goal from 18 yards and the lions finally had their second and went in at half time 2-0.

On 56 minutes the assistant referee ruined Sporting's fun for a second time as he flagged offside with the ball in the net. The crossbar came to Farense’s rescue next when Gonçalves shot on 71 minutes cannoned back off the crossbar and the follow up from 20 yards went over the bar. Gonçalves wasn't to be denied however as he cut inside two defenders and held off a third to slot home from 7 yards with 75 minutes gone and made it 3-0. In the 83rd minute the assistants flag went up again with a third disallowed goal. Four minutes into additional time Farense grabbed a consolation when a corner kick took a bizarre deflection on the edge of the six yard box which looped over Callai and into the net from an acute angle. Full-time Sporting 3 Farense 1. The win keeps Sporting top with Maritímo level on points but having played a game more. The lions goal difference now a healthy plus 15.

Nacional 1 Benfica 2

In Madeira Benfica found themselves behind when Ramirez put Nacional ahead just before the hour mark. Prestianni came to the visitors' rescue two minutes from time as Benfica first equalised before Pavlidis scored in the fourth minute of injury time to break islanders hearts. 31 attempts for the visitors scoring 1 of just 3 big chances created from that grand total of attempts. Fourteen of those shots from 18 yards or greater. Final XG 0.50 to 2.68.

First Half

The stadium of shite cast into a red glow like an Amsterdam brothel. Sporting in their traditional green and white horizontal stripes. Sporting get us underway and attack left to right. Bonne chance of seeing anything in the smoke filled stadium.

1 Through the smoke comes an image of Araújo barking at Ríos.
1 Suárez flattens someone on the far side. Sporting taking no prisoners out there in the early stages
2 Great combination of play from the lions ends with Geny winning a corner near side
2 Suárez brings a save at the near post from just to the left of the six yard box. He shot through the legs of Silva with Trubin diving the wrong way who somehow stopped it with his foot to keep the scores level
5 Aursnes mishits his cross into the arms of Rui Silva
5 Ríos penalised as he leaves his knee on Araújo sending the Uruguayan flying
7 Pathetic from Ríos who throws himself to the floor and the smallest of touches on his back from Gonçalves who finds it highly amusing and walks off chuckling to himself
8 Patience from the lions who've held onto the ball for the best part of a minute waiting for an opening
9 Fresneda wins the ball back twice in the centre. Good work from the Spaniard coming back from an attacking position
10 The lions snapping at everything tonight. They've started by far the better team
11 GOAL Benfica 0 Sporting CP 1. Huge mistake at the back as Barrenechea tried to turn on a short pass out from Trubin. Hjulmand won the ball and passed to Gonçalves who slotted home from 12 yards into the bottom right.
14 The travelling fans enjoying themselves up in the Gods
15 Morita the latest player to win the ball in the centre. Sporting are dominating their rivals and forcing them into a succession of errors. This is as good a start in any game for a long, long while for the lions who clearly want this more
16 Trincão shot blocked from 20 yards
17 Araújo fires the ball across the six yard box beating the outstretched foot of Suárez and in the end didn't miss the far post by much. They've recorded it as a shot but I think that was an attempted pass personally
19 The lions force Benfica into another error and their player remonstrates with Mourninho on the touchline. They've really rattled them
20 Suárez puts the defence under danger with a poor pass back and Hjulmand has to pull Ríos down. He gesticulates to the referee to show a card who's having none of it
21 Free kick 27 yards out beats the wall and the bar by about ten feet. First chance for the home side. Sudakov with the effort
22 Pavlidis kicks the back of Araújo's legs in the area and falls to the ground. Seen it all now
23 Every time Sporting are in the final third they're harrying the last man. The lions defenders have ten yards of space in front of them and all the time in the world
25 Araújo picks up the ball two yards inside the lions half, drives forward between two midfielders, holds off the challenge of another player and eventually let fly with a shot from 20 yards that whistles past the left hand post. That would have been a spectacular solo goal for the ages. Superb by the Uruguayan
26 GOAL Benfica 1 Sporting CP 1. Dedic cross from the right. Sudakov knocks Geny down and picks himself up and knocks the ball in from two yards. VAR checked for the foul and awards the goal. That'll be talked about for weeks to come
29 Yellow to Morita who catches Aursnes with an outstretched leg
30 Corner far side to Benfica. Silva claims
34 As a sign of how fluid Sporting are, Morita has been the central defender for the last minute of possession
34 Trincão flicks the ball over the head of a Benfica player and then was wiped out by Barreiro who in fairness appeared to take the ball but left the Portuguese in a heep needing treatment
38 Two Benfica players get in each others way inside the area and the ball dribbles into the hands of Silva. Dedic it was who went to shoot and Pavlidis got in his way as he went to take a shot not realising his teammate was about to strike the ball
42 Inácio blocks for a corner near side
45 Suárez beats the offside trap, cut the ball back inside the area to beat his man and went to shoot and found Otamendi where the ball was and kicked the Argentine defender instead

Plus two indicated

Half time

Benfica 1 Sporting CP 1

Electric start from the lions who took a deserved lead and until the equaliser they had dominated every inch of the pitch and the home side had zero answers. By virtue of tapping home from one yard Benfica go in with a skewed XG of 1.13 to 0.51 with the goal contributing 0.97 leaving 0.16 for their remaining 4 attempts. As you'd imagine from a Dérbi not an inch has been given on the pitch with challenges flying in from all angles but the referee has done well to let the game flow as well as he has in the opening 45.

The equaliser certainly seemed to change the lions game plan and allowed Benfica a degree of belief which they'd been lacking in their play from the first whistle as if it was they who were overawed by the occasion. If Sporting were just that in any way shape or form they certainly didn't show it. They've had the better chances, Trubin was fortunate to keep the scores level after two minutes, Araújo going close twice.

Second half

Benfica get us back underway. At least we can see the pitch at the start of this half. No changes from either side

46 Sporting transition from defence to attack. Suárez fouled wide left. Free kick awarded
47 Gonçalves over the ball, his cross swung in is headed as far as Trincão whose pass on the edge of the box found a red shirt and Benfica clear
48 Poor first touch by Gonçalves over ran the ball with Suárez set to go clear on the left. Disappointing. That was turning into a great counter attack
49 Poor from Gonçalves again who nonchalantly flicks the ball in midfield and concedes possession.
49 Diomande with go go gadget legs concedes a corner. No, apparently offside in the buildup
50 Morita once more the central defender in a three as the lions look to play out from the back with Diomande and Inácio either side
52 Great challenge by Araújo to win the ball in midfield who is then flattened by Aursnes. Finally with two players down the referee blows up to the disgust of Suárez who looked like he was about to run clear down the left
53 Dedic clears the bar from 20 yards. Trincão closing down on the edge of the area finally. He had too much time there
55 Yellow shown to Barreiro for a barge into Gonçalves
56 Poor from Hjulmand who gives the ball away in midfield. Lions need to switch back on
58 This game is dying as a spectacle right now
59 Geny cross from the right tries to find Suárez inside the six yard box who threw himself at the ball but was nowhere near to connecting
60 ➡️⬅️ Gonçalves for Simões and Morita for Quenda. When does Borges bring Reis on to score the winner?
61 Pavlidis shot into the arms of Silva from the edge of the D. Quenda claimed a foul in midfield not given
63 Aursnes shoots straight at Silva from 14 yards
64 Yellow shown to Suárez. Simulation or reaction to not being awarded a foul? Not sure
65 Sudakov unmarked drives into the arms of Silva from the edge of the D. Lions marking has been poor this half
65 Yellow card is out as Pavlidis goes down in the box. Shown to the Greek who caught Inácio who is down receiving treatment
68 Loose pass from Diomande picked up by Simões who was wise to the danger. Sporting need to wake up
70 Amazing how many times Fresneda makes the run out to the right and how many times they don't pass to him
71 This game is as horrible as the weather outside here in England which is blowing a gale and pissing down with rain
71 Yellow to Fresneda for a shirt pull
72 Simões penalised for contact on Barreiro. Free kick 30 yards out
73 Sudakov drives a ball low and flat into the box and found the head of Ríos whose header back across the box flicked away superbly by Suárez for a corner far side
73 Yellow shown to Araújo who tripped Ríos comically having been flattened by him seconds before
75 Yellow to Gonçalves. Impressive when not even on the pitch. Varandas gesticulating from the box can't believe it either. It used to be Neto, he passed the baton to Esgaio and it seems Pote now has it. Mind you St Juste I think was also good for a booking when not on the pitch
76 Benfica's players are trying to wind Araújo up looking for a reaction in the corner
77 Araújo clearly struck by a missile from the crowd
78 Finally the game is back underway and we don't wait long for another stoppage as Trincão is fouled in midfield
79 This half has been dog shit on the eye
80 Ríos fires wide from 19 yards past the far post. Again no one closing him down quick enough
80 ➡️ ⬅️ Sudakov withdrawn for Prestianni
83 Three players take a swipe at Geny on the far right and finally he's brought down
84 This is your life and its ending one minute at a time
84 Alisson getting last instructions from the mister. Let's hope he can inject something because Quenda has added nothing since he came on
85 ➡️⬅️ Trincão for Alisson and Ioannidis for Suárez
85 ➡️⬅️ Ivanovic for Pavlidis
86 Still time for Reis to come and be the hero. Flying tackle from Araújo
87 ➡️⬅️ Manu for Barrenechea
87 Alisson fouls Ríos. Free kick 36 yards out. Lions head clear and Geny taken out by Prestianni who's shown the yellow card
89 Geny down receiving treatment. We could still be here at midnight. I can't remember Sporting having a shot this half
90 VAR check for the foul on Geny. Prestianni yellow upgraded to a red. Benfica down to ten men. He flung himself at Geny from behind and it was the scissor action that will have earned him his dismissal

Plus seven shown albeit we were already two minutes on the clock when indicated so could be plus nine

+2 Geny cross cleared. Can the lions make their man advantage count?
+3 All the chants are coming from Sporting. The whistles from Benfica
+3 Quenda falls flat on his face in the box
+4 Hjulmand shoves Silva in the back like a bully in the playground and the defender goes flat on his face
+6 Corner far side won off Dahl
+6 Aursnes down with cramp as Quenda waits to take. Trubin punches clear
+7 Quenda cross back into the box straight into the arms of Trubin
+7 Fresneda slips at the worst moment outside of the area and Benfica clear after good work from Alisson to have fashioned a potential chance

Full time

Benfica 1 Sporting CP 1

The final word

Thank fuck the final whistle went. That was one of the worst halves of football I've had to sit through in a long time. Thankfully we were at least treated to a decent opening 45. Point apiece deserved in the end. Whilst the lions didn't register a single shot on target second half, those that came from the home side never really threatened.

It's the old cliché to say it was a game of two halves I know but if the boot fits wear it. Where the first half brought entertainment, the second just brought frustration and stoppages. You could feel your life force ebbing away. Even reduced to ten men Benfica weren't troubled by the lions which will do nothing to quell Borges critics. They will skip over the first half performance to suit their argument I'm sure.

You would have to pay me quite a large amount of money to rewatch that second 45. I predicted a 1-1 and after about ten minutes into the second half felt it was likely to stay that way. The thing for me at least when it comes to the Dérbi is not to lose and we've been sucker punched so many times in that fixture. Sporting were poor in every quarter second half. They were lacking ideas, invention and anyone capable of producing something creative. Trincão was a ghost although you wonder if the knock in the first half might have been a contributing factor. Gonçalves clearly not yet fully fit but he gets a goal for his efforts in a Dérbi. Geny who shone brightly in the opening couldn't restart his engine. Araújo was having his own personal battle like a wrestler in the Royal Rumble. You suspect he revels in playing the bad guy. Quenda offered nothing having come on. Thank Christ Chelsea went in on him early.

I feel sorry for Fresneda who once more covers a ridiculous amount of kilometres in support of Geny on the right only to not be used. Suárez put a shift in but he's not Ioannidis and it seems unfair to have expected him to have held the ball up to allow players to join him on the attack.

It's frustrating because we were truly great in the opening salvo of this game. Had Benfica not equalised so fortuitously I wouldn't have been surprised to see us go in at half time 2 or 3 goals to the good. They were fantastic, they were forcing errors, constantly first to the challenge and turning over the ball. They were smart in possession, crisp passes and patient in their buildup. Basically everything they weren't in the second half. Only when the home side went down to ten did they even think about finding a winner. You don't imagine a side with Gyökeres would have failed to fashion a single attempt in the second half. He'd have rolled his sleeves up and fashioned something from nothing and that's the difference between him and Suárez and it's a vast difference. I did promise not to compare the two but it's hard not to on a night like this where we've offered nothing in the second half.

I could go round in circles all night like the referees hand gestures. He'd be an internet sensation if you put him in traffic in Korea. Four choices for man of the match - I think sadly they're going to have to largely be based on the opening half hour of football which has left me pulling a grimace as I write that I'm glad you can't see. Araújo was great value all night to be fair even if it was more for him winding up the opposition second half than his quality of play. I'm entirely convinced that Fresneda covered more ground than anyone in a Sporting shirt tonight and felt he left it all out on the pitch and whilst he did slip at the worst moment right at the end that's the type of commitment you need from all your players in a Dérbi and it's a shame some of the others didn't do the same throughout the game. Rui Silva had another big game in goal and whilst never really threatened, he dealt with everything that came his way comfortably and he's one of those rare winter signings like Diomande who looks a cracking bit of business. I need to remind myself of that when I criticise their business every season in the winter window. Final choice goes to Hjulmand who was great first half hour especially, tough in the tackle, claimed the assist and led by example. Everything you want your captain to be and to show. Oh and his push on Silva inside the area whilst extremely childish may have been the highlight of the second half. The Dane gets my vote.

FC Bayern München next on Tuesday. I may need a long lay down until then.
