1.23 The Rise and Fall of Bruno de Carvalho: Shove the cup up your ass
In our last bonus post we bought you some of the communications sent from Bruno de Carvalho to the club captain Rui Patrício which ran through the entire gamut of emotions from anger to full on self pity.
If you enjoyed those well you're in luck because it turns out there are plenty more of those to keep us entertained. On October 22nd, 2018 CMTV revealed messages sent by de Carvalho to André Geraldes. They stemmed from the defeat to Marítimo on the final day of the season and failure to qualify for the Champions League the following season which would cost the club millions in lost revenue. We'll file this one under H for Hostility: "Fuck you all. That Rui is the king! Go fuck yourselves! Regarding the Cup, I won't go and there won't be any Sporting celebration. Buses and the party at Lisbon City Hall have been cancelled. Nothing. Shove the cup up your ass!” One assumes this was sent on either the evening of Sunday May 13th or on Monday May 14th.
I mean if only we knew how he really felt. I guess we'll never know.
Incredibly, or maybe not, this is de Carvalho, a man that is in love with himself and his own voice, and the media spotlight, he didn't deny having sent it. In fact he doubled down. Best of all he was in his own words “very calm,” when he sent it. Calm as a Hindu cow clearly.
Later that week he took to the RTP programme '5 para a meia noite' and discussed the message.
"Yes, I did send it. I'll explain something that's human. We were playing a game that was extremely important for Sporting fans and for the club's financial stability. We lost 20 to 30 million euros and gave that amount to a direct rival. I think my message was actually very calm. If you heard what I said at halftime of the Sporting - Vitória Setúbal Taça da Liga final, you'd all run away from here.”
Now I really want to know what he said there. I'm not running away, I'm running to it. I'm going to sit on the carpet like a child and wait for storytime. Are you sitting comfortably children? Then we'll begin.
But we don't know or moreover I don't know. So let's highlight what he said in relation to the Alcochete attacks on the same programme. Presumably he's going to say what a dark day it was for the club. Oh not wait that was the current club president Federico Varandas the best part of a year and a half later after the verdict.
Bruno de Carvalho was one of the guests on RTP's '5 para a meia noite' this Thursday, where he denied inciting the attacks on the Sporting squad in Alcochete in May, stressing that he would never be capable of such a thing: "Never, under any circumstances, given my personality, would I, directly or indirectly, create any problem for a player. People don't know me very well. If I want to confront a team, I don't need 50 hooded thugs, I'm enough and the whole locker room will go up in flames.”
Christ this fucking idiot fancies himself as a touch doesn't he? “I don't need 50 hooded thugs, I'm enough.” Talk about illusions of grandeur and not foe the first time either.
As we've learned with de Carvalho, just like João Pinheiro in a Clássico he can't wait to pull a card out from his pocket and wave it about, his however not a red or a yellow but clearly marked with one word: victim.
"People forget they're talking about a human being. People think presidents are sterile things, but people have to be careful. They say unpleasant things to me when I'm with my family. I'd understand if I were alone. But with my family, to start with verbal violence... I'm a lover of the 25th of April, but the 26th was a horror. It transformed us into a strange country, and Sporting is the parallel to that country.”
Look I have genuine sympathy for his family, but he doesn't
state the abuse is being aimed at them so I'm not going to lose any sleep. But
seriously, what does he expect? If the man could show an ounce of tact and
decorum about what happened then maybe attitudes wouldn't be so bad towards the
man. But when you fail to denounce what happened, truly, what did he expect? It
always does a 180° turn and he brings it back to himself. Let's assume 98% of
the clubs fan base were horrified by what happened. No club is immune from a
few halfwits, we had one as club president afterall. What people would have
expected is for him to have either shown strong leadership in a crisis, come
out firing that the club would take every steps to help identify those
involved, issue banning orders for life. Or he'd have done the more honourable
thing and resigned. The fact that five months later he's still claiming he's
the victim and then giving it Bertie Big Potatoes on RTP is frankly
embarrassing. You can imagine his kids friends telling them ‘you’re old man
thinks he's well hard doesn't he?’ Come on Bruno read the room!
