Matchday 1 - AEK Athens (A) 1-0 L

A winning start for the Greek Super League 1 winners against the Austrian Bundesliga Champions. AEK making their first UCL appearance after an absence of 8 years. LASK making their first appearance proper in the competition. AEK could have taken the lead with just 2 minutes on the clock through Luka Jović but the Serbians attempt from 12 yards bounced off the head of goalkeeper Jungwirth to safety. The 22 year old had tried to make his body position low and not your standard type of stop admittedly but they all count.

Romanian midfielder Răzvan Marin opened the scoring on 20 minutes curling a free kick half a yard outside of the LASK area into the top right hand corner for a spectacular goal that would have lit up any of the Champions League ties on Matchday 1. It could have been even worse on 35' when Varga dispossessed midfielder Bogarde 5 yards inside the LASK half. He continued his run into the box but was tackled at the last moment by Mbuyamba coming in from the right. 

38 seconds into time added on Varga got on the end of a free kick from the far right from 5 yards out but his header went into the ground and bounced over the bar to safety. Horvarth almost found an equaliser 3 minutes into the second half having broken free on the left. He may have got caught in two minds on which corner to try shoot into and in the end his effort from 11 yards towards the nearpost was saved by the leg of Brignoli. On 63' Luka Jović thought he'd made it 2-0 when he headed home from 7 yards only for Portuguese referee Luis Godhinho to rule it out for a marginal offside against Mayer. A minute past the 90 a corner to LASK from the left almost resulted in an equaliser when the Athens keeper collided with one of his defenders when he tried to come and claim. The ball dropped to Saša Kalajdžić who headed over from 7 yards with the goal gaping at this mercy. Big let off for the Greeks but 3 valuable points won.
